Camden Skyler Childers Identified as Victim in Deadly Officer-Involved Shooting Following High-Speed Chase in Catawba County

CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. – Authorities have formally identified Camden Skyler Childers, a 21-year-old resident of Stanley, North Carolina, as the motorcyclist who was fatally shot by a Newton police officer following a high-speed pursuit on June 26, 2025.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) confirmed that Childers was the individual killed in the incident, which began just before midnight when Newton Police attempted a traffic stop along U.S. Highway 70. The encounter escalated after Childers, operating a motorcycle, failed to comply with the stop and led officers on a chase that concluded in Conover.

According to investigators, after Childers’ motorcycle collided with a patrol vehicle, a brief struggle ensued, during which Newton Police Lieutenant Carlos Alverto Uribe discharged his weapon, fatally striking Childers. Despite immediate efforts by first responders to render aid, Childers was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at Catawba Valley Medical Center.

Lt. Uribe, 28, has since been arrested and charged with second-degree murder, following an SBI investigation into the officer-involved shooting. The case remains under review by the Catawba County District Attorney’s Office, and additional details may be released as the legal proceedings unfold.

Childers’ death has prompted community mourning and calls for transparency. Family and friends remember him as a passionate and vibrant young man whose life ended far too soon. An autopsy has been scheduled at the request of investigators, and the public awaits the release of body camera footage and further findings.

Authorities continue to encourage anyone with information related to the incident to contact the SBI or Newton Police Department.
