FORT VALLEY, GA — The community of Fort Valley is grieving the heartbreaking and senseless loss of James Oates, 66, who tragically lost his life in a fatal hit-and-run crash early Wednesday morning, July 23, 2025.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. along Highway 96 near Braswell Street, a typically quiet stretch of road in the early hours. According to Peach County Coroner Kerry Rooks, Mr. Oates was reportedly pushing a shopping cart along the roadside when he was struck by a vehicle that immediately fled the scene without stopping.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene and worked quickly to aid the victim, but James Oates was pronounced dead approximately 30 minutes later. His sudden and violent passing has left a deep void in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who knew him.
Ongoing Investigation
The Fort Valley Police Department has launched a full investigation into the hit-and-run and is actively working to identify the driver and vehicle responsible for the deadly collision. At this time, no arrests have been made and no suspect vehicle has been publicly identified.
Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses and homes in hopes of identifying the make and model of the vehicle involved. Authorities believe visibility may have been limited at the time of the crash, but remind the public that leaving the scene of a fatal accident is a serious criminal offense.
