Gaffney, S.C. — A tragic and unusual incident unfolded early Thursday morning in Cherokee County when a man was struck and killed while standing naked in the middle of Interstate 85.
According to the Cherokee County Coroner’s Office, dispatchers received multiple 911 calls around 3:25 a.m. reporting a naked man standing in the southbound lanes of I-85 beneath the Pleasant School Road bridge. Just minutes later, at approximately 3:30 a.m., the man was hit by at least two passing trucks.
Authorities say the man, who has not yet been identified, appears to be between 30 and 40 years old. No identification was found at the scene.
The incident prompted a temporary shutdown of the interstate as emergency responders and investigators arrived to assess the scene and recover evidence.
The coroner’s office is urging the public for assistance in identifying the victim. Anyone who may have information about a missing person matching the description or who may have witnessed the incident is encouraged to contact the Cherokee County Coroner’s Office at 864-487-6225 or call 911.
