DETROIT, Mich. — Detroit Police are investigating a shooting near the department’s 5th Precinct after a person was reportedly shot in the back early Friday evening.
The incident occurred in the 12800 block of Essex Street, where first responders were called following ShotSpotter alerts of gunfire recorded moments earlier on nearby Dickerson Street.
When officers arrived on scene, they found one victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the back. DEMS Medic 23 was quickly dispatched and asked to pull around to assist with emergency medical care. The condition of the victim has not been released at this time.
According to witness statements, at least two different firearms were heard being discharged during the incident, suggesting the involvement of multiple shooters. Witnesses also reported seeing a black truck fleeing the area, which may be connected to the suspects involved.
Police have not confirmed any arrests or identified suspects but say the shooting appears to be targeted. The DPD Gang Intelligence Unit and ShotSpotter analysts are reviewing audio and surveillance footage from the area to track down leads.
