Six Killed in Devastating Crash on I-485 Outer Loop in West Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A tragic multi-vehicle crash on the I-485 outer loop in west Charlotte claimed the lives of six people on Saturday, July 26, 2025, according to Medic. The devastating collision occurred around 11:40 a.m. near Exit 9 and has left the community reeling as first responders continue working at the scene, which remained active into the afternoon.

Medic confirmed that six individuals were pronounced dead at the scene. Another person was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. As of 3 p.m., the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, and it is still unclear if any charges will be filed.

Due to the severity of the crash, the outer loop of I-485 has been closed since the incident. The North Carolina Department of Transportation has advised motorists to take an alternate route: Exit 10A to I-85 North, Exit 38 to I-77 South, and then back to I-485. Officials say the closure is expected to last for several hours, if not longer.

Further complicating emergency response efforts, Medic also reported a separate, unrelated crash nearby on I-485 at I-85 South. One person in that incident was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Although the proximity of the two accidents has created additional logistical challenges for responders, authorities confirmed the crashes are unrelated.

“Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by this horrific incident,” Medic shared in a statement, expressing the deep sorrow felt across the region. As investigators work to determine what led to the deadly collision, families and loved ones of the victims are left grieving an unimaginable loss.
