It is with heavy hearts that we share the unexpected passing of Joni James Smith, Miss Rodeo America 1990. A devoted wife, loving mother, and true ambassador for the rodeo world, Joni touched countless lives through her kindness, strength, and passion for the sport.
Joni’s legacy spans generations—following in the footsteps of her mother, Karen Lavens James (Miss Rodeo America 1962), and making her own mark as a champion, mentor, and inspiration. Her accomplishments were many, but it was the way she lived—with heart, humility, and grit—that made her truly unforgettable.
She leaves behind her beloved husband, World Champion Steer Wrestler Mike Smith, and their four children: Callen, Naomi, Cole, and Nykell. Our thoughts and deepest prayers are with the Smith and James families during this incredibly difficult time.
