CHICAGO, IL — Authorities are urgently seeking the public’s help in identifying the driver responsible for a tragic hit-and-run crash that killed 22-year-old Marcella Herrera and seriously injured her fiancé, Mauricio Leyva, in the Pilsen neighborhood last weekend.
The fatal collision occurred at approximately 11:18 p.m. on July 19 in the 2000 block of South Ashland Avenue, as the couple was crossing Ashland in the north crosswalk at Cullerton Street. According to the Chicago Police Department, a dark-colored Dodge Journey was traveling northbound at high speed, struck the couple, and fled the scene without stopping.
Eyewitnesses told police that the SUV was speeding past other vehicles before the crash. One pedestrian stated she was nearly struck as well as the driver blew through the intersection. The victims were found lying on the median of Ashland Avenue.
Marcella Herrera, just 22, died at the scene from multiple injuries. Her fiancé, 21-year-old Mauricio Leyva, sustained facial injuries, including a broken nose, and possibly a back injury. He is currently in fair condition, recovering from the traumatic incident.
The suspect vehicle is believed to have damage to the front right bumper, quarter panel, and a broken right headlight. It was last seen turning west onto 19th Street from Ashland.
In hopes of generating leads, Cook County Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 cash reward for any information that leads to an arrest or indictment in the case. Tipsters can remain anonymous.
