Teen Fatally Shot at Avalon Fishing Pier Identified as Zane Hughes; Suspect in Custody

KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. A tragic shooting on Thursday afternoon at Avalon Fishing Pier has left the Outer Banks community in mourning after authorities confirmed the victim as Zane Hughes, a student at First Flight High School.

The shooting occurred around 2:37 p.m. in the parking lot of the well-known pier in Kill Devil Hills. According to Assistant Police Chief Dana Harris, officers arrived on the scene in under four minutes after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire.

Hughes was found at the scene with fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on-site. A second teenage male, also believed to be a student, sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and was airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. His current condition has not been publicly released.

Police quickly took the suspect into custody. He has been identified as Henry Hargis, also a student at First Flight High School. Details about the motive remain under investigation, and charges are pending as authorities continue to interview witnesses and collect evidence.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the tight-knit coastal community and the local school district. Grief counselors are being made available to students and staff at First Flight High School as they cope with the heartbreaking loss of one of their own.
