The tight-knit community of Bayville, New Jersey is reeling after a devastating act of violence claimed the life of 22-year-old Amanda Decker, a young woman remembered for her warmth, vibrant spirit, and deep love for her family and friends. The tragic shooting occurred late Friday night, casting a shadow of grief over the quiet Ocean County town.
Authorities with the Berkeley Township Police Department confirmed that Decker was found unresponsive at a residence on the 300 block of Pinewald-Keswick Road following reports of a domestic disturbance. Emergency responders arrived to find Decker suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite efforts to save her, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police quickly identified Aiden Fowles, 24, Decker’s boyfriend, as the primary suspect. He was taken into custody without incident shortly after officers arrived. Fowles has since been charged with first-degree murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
According to investigators, the shooting is believed to be the result of a domestic dispute that escalated into violence. The case is now being handled jointly by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office and the Berkeley Township Police Department, with detectives conducting interviews, collecting forensic evidence, and reviewing surveillance footage from the area.
In a statement released Saturday morning, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer expressed condolences to the victim’s family and vowed to seek justice.
“This is a heartbreaking loss for Amanda’s loved ones and the entire Bayville community,” he said. “We are committed to ensuring that justice is served and that the person responsible is held fully accountable.”
Amanda Decker was a recent college graduate and had just begun building a career in healthcare, according to family friends. Her sudden and senseless death has prompted an outpouring of grief and support from the community. A candlelight vigil is being planned in her honor, and a GoFundMe has been launched to help cover funeral expenses.
Neighbors described Decker as “a sweet soul” who always had a smile and kind word for everyone she met.
“She had so much life ahead of her,” said one local resident. “This doesn’t feel real. It’s a nightmare.”
Fowles is currently being held at the Ocean County Jail pending a detention hearing. Authorities have not disclosed whether any prior history of domestic violence existed between the couple but noted that the investigation is still ongoing.
As the town of Bayville grapples with the tragedy, officials are reminding the public of the importance of speaking out against domestic violence and offering support to those who may be at risk. Resources and support services are being made available to residents in the wake of the incident.
