HARVEY, Ill. — A violent night in the south suburban community of Harvey has left seven people injured, including a 4-year-old child, and one suspected gunman dead following a mass shooting at a house party on Saturday, August 2, 2025.
According to the City of Harvey, police responded shortly after 8:00 p.m. to reports of gunfire in the 14400 block of Des Plaines Street. When officers arrived, they found several people suffering from gunshot wounds after chaos erupted at a large gathering.
Preliminary reports indicate that two armed suspects arrived at the party and opened fire into the crowd. In a swift response, a licensed concealed carry holder (CCL-holder) who was attending the party drew their weapon and returned fire, fatally shooting one of the suspects at the scene. The second suspect was also injured in the exchange and has been taken into custody after being transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Among the seven victims injured was a 4-year-old boy, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Four others were taken to local hospitals, also with injuries not considered life-threatening. The exact conditions of the remaining two victims have not yet been disclosed.
As of Sunday afternoon, the scene remained active, with shattered glass and evidence markers scattered throughout the area.
Residents described the incident as traumatic and unnerving. “This is something you would hear if you were at war,” said Willie Hill, 73, who lives nearby. “It was terrible. Loud. I mean, you could tell it was nothing to play with.”
Michael Parker, a neighbor across the street, added, “Bullets fly. They don’t have a name on them.”
Officials emphasized that the incident appears to be isolated, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
However, early Sunday morning, at approximately 4:50 a.m., Harvey police were called to another shooting in the 200 block of Calumet Boulevard. Officers discovered a man inside a minivan with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene and later identified as 24-year-old Charles Lipsey, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Preliminary findings suggest this second shooting may have been retaliatory in nature, potentially linked to the earlier violence at the house party.
The Harvey Police Department, with the assistance of multiple law enforcement agencies, is actively investigating both incidents. Witnesses are reportedly cooperating with investigators.
Anyone with additional information is urged to contact the Harvey Police Department as authorities work to piece together the events that led to these acts of violence.
