Fatal Officer-Involved Incident in Columbus: Lauree Jankowski Identified

Columbus, NE — The Nebraska State Patrol has confirmed the identity of the woman fatally shot during a police-involved incident on Saturday evening as 33-year-old Lauree Jankowski.

According to authorities, the incident occurred around 5 p.m. while Columbus police officers were conducting an investigation in the area. During the encounter, Jankowski allegedly assaulted one of the officers with a knife. In response to the attack, another officer discharged their weapon, striking and injuring Jankowski.

Officers on the scene immediately rendered aid; however, Jankowski was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. The injured officer was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and was later released that same evening.

A knife was recovered at the scene, officials said. The Nebraska State Patrol is leading the investigation into the use-of-force incident. In line with state law, a grand jury will also be convened to review the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The investigation remains ongoing.
