KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Larry D. Banks, 69, has been identified as the victim who tragically lost his life when the roof of a Family Dollar store collapsed near West 37th Street and Broadway Boulevard. The devastating incident has sparked legal action and drawn the attention of federal safety investigators.
According to the Kansas City Police Department, the roof collapse occurred during business hours, leaving several people injured and claiming the life of Mr. Banks. He was a beloved husband, friend, and member of the community, whose sudden death has left family and friends in mourning.
In the wake of this tragedy, Mr. Banks’ wife has filed a lawsuit against Family Dollar and the property owner, seeking accountability for what she alleges was a preventable disaster. The lawsuit names Arthur Fels Company, Family Dollar Stores of Missouri, LLC, and Family Dollar, Inc. as defendants. It claims that the companies were aware of the building’s compromised structural integrity and the risk of roof collapse.
The complaint details that a visible sag in the corner of the roof had been present for at least two days prior to the collapse. Furthermore, it alleges that a store employee had submitted complaints about the deteriorating roof condition to the landlords at least a week before the incident occurred.
This is not the only legal action stemming from the collapse. Last week, another individual who sustained injuries in the same incident also filed a lawsuit against Family Dollar.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is currently conducting a thorough investigation into the cause of the collapse and whether safety violations played a role.
Larry D. Banks is remembered as a kind and hardworking man whose life was tragically cut short. His loss underscores the critical importance of workplace and public safety, and his family continues to seek justice in his name.
