The Atlanta community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 19-year-old Cooper Schoenke, who was tragically killed in a violent crash on the evening of April 14 in Little Five Points. Prosecutors announced Wednesday that the driver responsible for the fatal collision has been charged with felony murder and several other serious offenses.
According to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office, the deadly incident began when a Georgia State Patrol trooper attempted to stop Faduma Mohamed, 24, of Stone Mountain, for speeding and reckless driving on I-20 eastbound near Boulevard.
Mohamed allegedly fled the traffic stop, exiting onto Moreland Avenue and leading the trooper on a high-speed chase for nearly two miles. Authorities say she ran a red light at the intersection of Moreland Avenue and Euclid Avenue, where she crashed into another vehicle — fatally injuring Cooper Schoenke, who was inside.
Schoenke was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving his family, friends, and community devastated by the sudden and senseless loss of a young life with so much promise ahead.
A DeKalb County grand jury indicted Mohamed on Tuesday on the following charges:
- Felony murder
- 4 counts of first-degree vehicular homicide
- Fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer
- DUI – with controlled substance present in blood
- DUI – drugs (less safe)
- DUI – multiple substances (less safe)
- Reckless driving
- Possession of methamphetamine
The DA’s office confirmed that Mohamed will be arraigned before a superior court judge, after which a trial date will be set.
As the legal process moves forward, the loved ones of Cooper Schoenke continue to grieve the loss of a bright, kind-hearted young man whose life was cut short by a reckless act. He is remembered for his gentle spirit, his love for others, and the profound impact he made in just 19 years.
