Mother and Daughter Arrested After Infant Suffers Skull Fracture in Violent Family Fight

THIBODAUX, La. —Two women have been arrested in Thibodaux, Louisiana, after a violent altercation between a mother and daughter left an infant with a fractured skull, the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office reported.

Suspects:

  • Disheekia McDowell, 39 (grandmother of the infant)
  • Jada McDowell, 22 (mother of the infant)

Both women were arrested following a May 27 incident inside a residence on Karla Drive, where deputies say a domestic argument escalated into a physical fight. According to investigators, the pair began striking one another with household items during the altercation.

At one point during the struggle, Jada picked up her infant daughter while continuing to engage physically with her mother. Amid the chaos, the infant was injured. She was rushed to a local hospital, where doctors determined she had sustained a fractured skull.

Following an investigation, both Disheekia and Jada McDowell were taken into custody and charged with:

  • Domestic abuse involving a child
  • Second-degree cruelty to juveniles

Bail for Disheekia McDowell has been set at $160,000, while Jada McDowell’s bail is set at $105,000.

Authorities have not released further information about the infant’s current condition, but say child welfare officials are now involved to ensure her safety going forward.

“This case is deeply troubling,” said Sheriff Craig Webre. “Any time a child is harmed as a result of domestic violence, it strikes at the very core of our community. This is a reminder of how quickly heated situations can escalate with devastating consequences.”

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office.
