LEE COUNTY, Ala. — A deadly shooting in the Beulah community has claimed the life of Oscar Lee Eiland, 58, of Opelika. Authorities have arrested Christopher James Espey Futral, also 58 and of Opelika, who admitted to firing the fatal shots—allegedly missing his intended target.

The incident unfolded on Sunday, June 1, 2025, at approximately 7:18 p.m. CDT, when Lee County deputies were dispatched to a 911 call reporting a shooting in the 100 block of Lee Road 685.

Deputies arriving on scene located Futral hiding behind a fence near his home. He reportedly called out to officers, saying he was putting his gun down and coming out with his hands up. He was immediately detained and secured in a patrol unit.

At a neighboring residence, deputies found Oscar Lee Eiland suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the pelvic and groin area. Officers began CPR and continued lifesaving efforts until emergency medical personnel arrived. Eiland was transported to East Alabama Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Investigators recovered a .243 caliber bolt-action hunting rifle and multiple spent shell casings from Futral’s yard. According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Futral admitted to firing from a perched position about 75 yards away. He told authorities he was aiming at someone else and had missed his intended target, fatally striking Eiland instead.

Futral was arrested on the scene and has been charged with murder. He is currently being held in the Lee County Detention Center with no bond, pending an Aniah’s Law hearing, which will determine his eligibility for pretrial release due to the violent nature of the crime.

The motive behind the shooting and identity of the alleged intended target have not been disclosed. Investigators are continuing to gather evidence and speak with witnesses.

Anyone with information related to the case is urged to contact the Lee County Sheriff’s Office at 334-749-5651 or Central Alabama Crime Stoppers at 334-215-STOP (7867).
