‘An Amazing Man’: California Police Officer Killed, Another Hospitalized in Baldwin Park Shooting

BALDWIN PARK, CA — A community is in mourning after a tragic shooting in Baldwin Park on Saturday night claimed the life of a police officer and left another hospitalized. Authorities have identified the event as a “double murder,” with a second victim, an adult male civilian, also found dead at the scene. A suspect is in custody.

According to officials from the Baldwin Park Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, officers responded to a report of gunshots and a person down just after 7 p.m. in the 4200 block of Filhurst Avenue. The emergency call indicated that a suspect was actively firing a rifle.

Upon arrival, officers immediately came under fire. One officer, later identified by colleagues as “an amazing man” and a dedicated public servant, was fatally shot. A second officer was wounded and remains hospitalized. His condition is reported as stable, and he is surrounded by family.

Authorities also discovered the body of an unidentified adult male at the scene. Officials believe the civilian was killed before police arrived, bringing the total number of fatalities to two.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna confirmed that an adult male suspect is in custody and believed to be responsible for both killings. He allegedly opened fire on responding officers and was shot during the exchange. He was taken to a local hospital and is listed in stable condition.

Sheriff Luna said the weapon used in the attack has been recovered. The motive behind the shootings has not been publicly disclosed, and investigators are working to piece together the timeline and circumstances surrounding the violence.

“This is a devastating night for Baldwin Park,” Sheriff Luna said in a press conference. “The officer who was killed gave his life in service to this community. He was an amazing man, a true professional, and a hero.”

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is now leading the investigation, with support from Baldwin Park police and other local agencies. The names of the victims have not yet been released pending family notification.

News of the officer’s death has sent shockwaves through the community, with residents and fellow officers gathering outside local stations to leave flowers, candles, and handwritten messages of support.

City officials are expected to release more details, including plans to honor the fallen officer, in the coming days.

Anyone with information related to the shooting is urged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department as the investigation continues.
