At Least 80 Shots Fired During Deadly Mass Shooting at Catawba County House Party, Sheriff Says

HICKORY, N.C. (June 1, 2025) — A deadly mass shooting erupted early Sunday morning at a house party in Catawba County, leaving one man dead and 11 others injured. Authorities say the violent incident unfolded around 12:45 a.m. at a residence on Walnut Acres Drive, near Highway 127 in Hickory.

According to the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office, multiple shooters opened fire at the gathering, unleashing a barrage of at least 80 gunshots from various distances. Investigators were still collecting shell casings as of 4 p.m. Sunday, and officials cautioned that the final count could increase.

Major Aaron Turk of the sheriff’s office confirmed that several weapons were used during the attack, including a “long weapon,” though specific types of firearms have not yet been disclosed to the public.

Turk emphasized that there is currently no evidence to suggest an ongoing threat to the broader community.

“It seems to be that those who initiated the shooting were focused on the party,” he stated during a press briefing.

No arrests have been made as of this report, and investigators have not yet revealed what may have led to the shooting. The motive remains unknown.

Victims

Twelve individuals were struck by gunfire in the incident. One of the victims, 58-year-old Shawn Hood of Lenoir, was pronounced dead at the scene. Another victim is reportedly in critical condition, while the conditions of the remaining victims have not been disclosed.

Authorities are urging anyone with information or video footage of the party or shooting to come forward to assist with the ongoing investigation.
