  • Fort Bliss Family Involved in Flash Flood Tragedy While on Leave in Ruidoso

    FORT BLISS, Texas — A devastating tragedy has impacted the Fort Bliss community after a soldier and their family were caught in a sudden flash flood while on approved leave near Ruidoso, New Mexico, on July 8.

    The family had been staying at a recreational vehicle campground when the flash flood struck unexpectedly. The soldier and their spouse sustained serious injuries and are currently being treated at a medical facility in Texas. Tragically, the couple’s two young children, ages 7 and 4, were located after a thorough search and rescue effort but were pronounced deceased by local emergency responders.

    “Our hearts are heavy with grief following this devastating loss,” said Brig. Gen. Rory Crooks, deputy commanding general of the 1st Armored Division and Fort Bliss. “The entire Fort Bliss community extends our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones affected by this tragedy. We are coordinating closely with local authorities and are providing full support to the family under these tragic circumstances.”

    Fort Bliss officials are actively working with local responders and military casualty assistance teams to ensure the family receives the emotional, medical, and logistical support they need as they navigate this painful time.

    In accordance with Department of Defense policy and out of respect for the family’s privacy, the identities of those involved will not be released at this time.

    The Fort Bliss community stands united in mourning, offering thoughts, prayers, and unwavering support to a fellow military family devastated by this heartbreaking loss.
