Heartbreak in Elsmere: Mother Says 15-Year-Old Suspect in Teen’s Killing Was Her Daughter’s Boyfriend

ELSMERE, Ky.  — A grieving mother is speaking out following the tragic death of her 15-year-old daughter, Tristen Smith, who was fatally shot on Monday in the Northern Kentucky city of Elsmere. According to the teen’s mother, the suspect arrested in connection with the shooting was Tristen’s boyfriend—also just 15 years old.

Described by her family as “a light in the darkness,” Tristen was known for her vibrant personality, infectious energy, and joyful spirit. “She was the life of the party,” her mother said tearfully, remembering the way her daughter’s presence could brighten any room. Tristen had attended both Campbell County High School and Harrison High School.

The shooting occurred on Autumn Avenue. Elsmere police reported that after the incident, the teenage suspect fled the scene and claimed he discarded the weapon, though he was unsure where it landed. Officers have since spent extensive time canvassing the area, going door-to-door in search of the firearm. As of now, the gun has not been recovered.

Authorities are urging residents in the neighborhood to remain alert. They warn that the missing weapon is believed to still be loaded and may hold vital forensic evidence. If found, officials strongly advise against touching it and instead call police immediately.

The suspect has been charged as a juvenile with murder and tampering with physical evidence. Due to his age, police have not released his identity. His relationship with Tristen has raised even more questions and sorrow in a case that has already left a family—and an entire community—reeling.

Local 12 has made several attempts to contact Elsmere Police Chief Russell Wood for more details regarding the investigation, including the circumstances leading up to the shooting and the ongoing search for the weapon, but have not received a response at the time of this writing.

As the investigation continues, Tristen’s loved ones are left with unimaginable grief. Her mother’s words echo the heartache of a community mourning the senseless loss of a young life full of promise and light.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The search for a missing man ended in heartbreak Wednesday evening as officials recovered the body of Michael Martindell, 46, from the lake outside the Raleigh Springs Civic Center.

Michael was last seen on Tuesday evening, when witnesses reported he had gone into the water but never resurfaced. Emergency crews from the Memphis Fire and Police Departments launched a coordinated search around 7 p.m., but low visibility forced them to pause overnight. Recovery efforts resumed at sunrise Wednesday and concluded tragically when his body was found around 4:30 p.m..

His family, devastated by the loss, confirmed that surveillance footage showed Michael jumping into the lake. He was not seen exiting the water afterward.

Michael Martindell was experiencing homelessness and battling substance use disorder at the time of his death. His father, Barry Martindell, speaking through tears, said:

“My son didn’t just die from drowning. He died from the disease of alcohol and drug addiction. We’re going to miss him terribly.”

His daughter, Andrea Martindell, shared a powerful message with the community:

“Hug your loved ones close. Check on them. Check on their mental health… Always try to be there for somebody, even when you think you don’t have the time. Make time, because they need it.”

This tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the devastating toll addiction and mental health struggles can take, and the importance of compassion, connection, and support.

The Martindell family is urging anyone struggling—or loving someone who is—to seek help, reach out, and never give up on the ones they love.
