LORAIN, Ohio — The city of Lorain is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Officer Phillip Wagner, a 35-year-old police officer who succumbed to injuries sustained in a tragic ambush shooting on Wednesday afternoon. Wagner, a dedicated three-year veteran of the Lorain Police Department, passed away Thursday at MetroHealth Medical Center, where he had been receiving treatment for critical injuries.
Officer Wagner is remembered not only for his commitment to public service but also as a devoted husband and father of two children. His death marks a devastating loss for his family, colleagues, and the wider community he served with honor.
The incident unfolded shortly after 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23, in the area of Colorado and Missouri Avenues, where Wagner and his partner, Officer Peter Gale, 51, were taking their lunch break and sharing a pizza. According to police, the officers were ambushed by 28-year-old Michael Parker, who opened fire with a high-powered rifle.
Officer Brent Payne, 47, responded to the scene to assist and was also shot during the exchange. He remains in critical condition. Officer Gale sustained a gunshot wound to the hand and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. His injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening.
The suspect, Michael Parker, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Elyria Police Department is leading the investigation and has requested support from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI). Authorities are working to uncover the motive behind the ambush and determine whether Parker had any prior connection to the officers involved.
In a statement released Thursday evening, the Lorain Police Department expressed deep sorrow over Wagner’s death:
“Officer Wagner was a dedicated public servant who exemplified the values of our department. His commitment, bravery, and compassion will never be forgotten. Our thoughts are with his family, and we ask the community to keep them, along with Officers Payne and Gale, in their prayers.”
A memorial for Officer Wagner is expected to be announced in the coming days. Grief counselors have been made available for law enforcement personnel, and community vigils are being organized in his honor.
This tragic incident serves as a painful reminder of the risks faced daily by those who protect and serve. The Lorain community stands united in grief, remembering Officer Phillip Wagner for the hero he was.
