Joel Munoz – Texas Teen Killed in High-Speed Crash Following Pursuit in Smith County

SMITH COUNTY, Texas — A tragic accident in the early hours of Sunday morning has claimed the life of 17-year-old Joel Munoz, a Texas teenager whose vehicle crashed during a high-speed pursuit. The Smith County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Pleasant Hollow Road.

According to authorities, a patrol deputy observed a truck traveling at an extremely high rate of speed and clocked it at 124 miles per hour using radar. When the deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the driver — later identified as Munoz — reportedly turned off the vehicle’s headlights in an attempt to evade law enforcement under the cover of darkness.

A second deputy joined the pursuit shortly after, but within minutes, the vehicle was discovered off the roadway, having flipped multiple times in a violent crash. Both Joel Munoz and his passenger, another juvenile, were ejected from the vehicle during the rollover.

Munoz was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Authorities have not released details on the condition of the passenger or their identity due to their age.

The Smith County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation into the crash and the events that led up to the fatal pursuit. Investigators are expected to review dashcam footage, examine the wreckage, and speak with potential witnesses in order to better understand what caused the incident and why the teen attempted to flee.

In an official statement, the Sheriff’s Office extended condolences to the family of Joel Munoz, urging the public to reflect on the dangers of reckless driving, especially among younger drivers.

“High-speed driving and fleeing from law enforcement can lead to irreversible consequences,” a spokesperson stated. “This is a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly lives can be lost.”

Joel Munoz’s death has left the community in mourning. Friends, family, and neighbors are grappling with the loss of a young life filled with potential, now tragically cut short.

Anyone with additional information about the crash is encouraged to contact the Smith County Sheriff’s Office to assist in the ongoing investigation.

As the community mourns Joel’s passing, law enforcement and loved ones alike hope that his story will serve as a powerful warning about the devastating consequences of dangerous driving choices.

  • William Benes Identified as Victim in Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash on SR-305 in Lander County

William Benes Identified as Victim in Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash on SR-305 in Lander County

LLANDER COUNTY, Nev. — A devastating crash in rural Lander County has claimed the life of 55-year-old William Benes, a resident of Las Vegas. The fatal collision occurred around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 20, along State Route 305 (SR-305), near mile marker 50—between the towns of Austin and Battle Mountain—according to the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP).

The NHP’s preliminary investigation reveals that three vehicles were involved in the crash. A white 1991 Jeep Cherokee was traveling southbound on SR-305, followed closely by a white 2026 Freightliner commercial truck. For reasons that remain under investigation, the Jeep suddenly veered across the center line into the northbound lane and sideswiped a white 2020 Ford F-150 headed in the opposite direction.

The impact caused the Ford F-150 to swerve into the southbound lane, where it collided with the front left side of the Freightliner. The collision pushed the Ford off the roadway, where it came to rest. Meanwhile, the Freightliner jackknifed, blocking both directions of SR-305, and the Jeep flipped over after running off the road.

William Benes, who was driving the Ford F-150, died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash. The drivers of the Jeep and the Freightliner were injured but survived, and were transported for medical treatment. Their injuries were reported to be non-life-threatening. There were no passengers in any of the vehicles.

The Nevada Highway Patrol’s Traffic Homicide Unit is leading the investigation. Authorities have not yet released information about the cause of the Jeep’s abrupt lane departure and are working to determine whether factors such as driver impairment, distraction, or vehicle malfunction may have played a role.

The wreck temporarily shut down SR-305 as emergency personnel responded, assessed the crash scene, and cleared the roadway.

The death of William Benes has left his family and community mourning the loss of a man whose life ended tragically on a quiet stretch of Nevada highway. Officials extended their deepest condolences to his loved ones and are urging anyone with information or who witnessed the crash to contact NHP to aid in the ongoing investigation.

As the case develops, law enforcement is reminding all motorists to remain vigilant and cautious, especially in rural areas where high speeds, limited visibility, and long response times can increase the risk of serious accidents.

Trinity was last seen around 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 12, near the Destin East Pass, a popular but unpredictable stretch of water where swift currents meet the Gulf of Mexico. The Sheriff’s Office also extended heartfelt thanks to the many volunteers and community members who contributed time, effort, and support.

As the community comes to terms with this painful moment, officials urge everyone to continue keeping Trinity and her family in their thoughts and prayers. Though the physical search has paused, the emotional and spiritual support of the community remains critical in the days ahead.

Anyone with information related to Trinity’s disappearance is still encouraged to contact the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office.
