  • In Memoriam: Commander Mark Dunleavy

    In Memoriam: Commander Mark Dunleavy

It is with profound sadness and enduring admiration that we share the passing of Commander Mark Dunleavy, a cherished husband, father, naval officer, and one of the finest Blue Angels to ever wear the uniform. Mark passed away following a courageous battle with glioblastoma, leaving behind a legacy of excellence, service, and heart that will long inspire those who knew and flew beside him.

During his remarkable three-year tour with the U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, Mark flew three of the four Diamond positions — #3, #4, and #2 — a testament to his unmatched skill, adaptability, and precision. Trained by legends Scooter Moyer and Kato Cooke, Mark helped elevate the Team’s legacy. As the Slot Pilot and Training Officer during 1998 Winter Training, he helped introduce the Diamond Half-Cuban 8 Takeoff and proudly restored the Diamond Landing to the demonstration routine — milestones that reflected both innovation and reverence for tradition.

But Mark’s impact extended far beyond the cockpit. Whether at school visits, hospital commitments, or airshows, he brought joy, awe, and inspiration to thousands — especially the young dreamers standing wide-eyed at the crowd line. His tireless passion for sharing the spirit of naval aviation, and his unwavering belief in duty, honor, and country, left an indelible impression on all who met him.

Mark was not only an elite aviator — he was a beloved teammate, a devoted husband, a loving father, and a steadfast friend. His life was defined by quiet strength, integrity, and compassion. Even in his final years, facing the cruel toll of cancer, he remained a vivid example of courage, humility, and grace, showing us all what it truly means to lead with character and love.

Those of us lucky enough to serve with him — the 1997–1999 Blue Angels Teams, officers and enlisted alike — will forever cherish the camaraderie, trust, and brotherhood we shared. The bonds forged in that tight Diamond formation are unbreakable.

We salute you, Mark. You lived with honor, flew with brilliance, and inspired with heart. Your wings may be still, but your legacy soars on.

Blue skies, #3. We’ll take it from here.
