BIRMINGHAM, AL – A Birmingham man who was found unresponsive and suffering from a gunshot wound inside his home earlier this month has died, authorities confirmed Thursday.

Mardrecus Quartez Hardy, 42, was pronounced dead at 10:35 p.m. on Wednesday, July 16, at UAB Hospital, nearly two weeks after he was discovered in critical condition. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office released the confirmation Thursday morning.

The incident began on Saturday, July 5, when officers from Birmingham’s East Precinct were dispatched at 2:40 p.m. to the 6900 block of Division Avenue following a call about a person down inside a residence.

According to Officer Truman Fitzgerald, it was Hardy’s family members who made the grim discovery after conducting a welfare check. Upon entering the home, they believed Hardy had already passed away.

However, when Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service arrived, they found Hardy still alive but unresponsive. It was later determined that he had been shot, though the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear.

Hardy was rushed to the hospital, where he remained in critical condition until his passing nearly two weeks later.

SALEM, N.H. — A high-speed police pursuit ended in a dramatic crash and arrests on Wednesday, July 16th, after a suspect involved in the theft of a police officer’s rifle was taken into custody in Salem, New Hampshire.

According to the Salem Police Department, the incident unfolded at approximately 12:54 PM when officers were alerted to an active vehicle pursuit heading into Salem from Methuen, Massachusetts. Methuen Police, alongside Massachusetts State Police, were pursuing a Hyundai Santa Fe linked to a string of vehicle break-ins dating back to June 17th in Salem. One of the most alarming incidents involved a break-in of an off-duty police officer’s vehicle, from which a department-issued rifle was stolen.

The pursuit escalated dangerously after entering Salem, with the suspect’s vehicle nearly striking a Salem Police cruiser head-on while crossing the Cross Street bridge over Route 93. Undeterred, Salem Police joined the Massachusetts agencies in the pursuit, which continued through Cluff Crossing Road and onto Route 28.

The chase came to a crashing end when the Hyundai Santa Fe collided on the rail trail at the intersection of Cluff Crossing and Route 28. Both occupants of the vehicle attempted to flee on foot but were quickly apprehended by law enforcement after a brief foot chase.

The driver was identified as Scott Marshall Sullivan Jr., 34, of Derry, NH. Sullivan, who was already out on bail for multiple theft-related offenses and a prior charge of Resisting Arrest in Salem, complained of unknown injuries and was transported to a local hospital before being processed at the Salem Police Department.

Sullivan now faces a host of serious charges, including:

Lubia Estevez, age 60, served as a food services cashier in the district for 15 years, most recently at Plainfield High School, where her warmth, kindness, and unwavering generosity left a lasting impact on students and staff alike.

Police say Estevez and her friend, Forest Whitlock, were driving along Stelle Avenue when their vehicle turned into a ditch and was swept into Cedar Brook by the powerful floodwaters. Family members shared that Estevez had been on her way to bingo, one of her favorite pastimes, when the disaster struck.

OPELIKA, AL – A tense and dangerous overnight standoff in Opelika ended in tragedy when a 32-year-old man was fatally shot by police, while a 2-year-old child and a woman emerged from the incident physically unharmed.

The situation unfolded late Wednesday night, when Opelika police responded to a report of domestic violence at a residence in the 3000 block of Wymond Drive at approximately 10:41 p.m. Upon arrival, officers encountered a man who was reportedly irate and armed with a gun.

Authorities said the man quickly barricaded himself inside the home, holding the woman and young child with him. The woman was eventually able to leave the residence safely, but the toddler remained inside during the hours-long standoff.

In response to the escalating danger, Opelika crisis negotiators and the Lee County SWAT Team were deployed to the scene. Officers attempted to engage the man in ongoing negotiations throughout the ordeal, but the situation took a critical turn.

“Negotiations continued, but the subject’s actions led to an officer-involved shooting,” the Opelika Police Department said in an official statement.
