That’s how those who knew Chloe Childress, 18, are remembering her in the wake of a heartbreaking tragedy that has shaken communities across Texas and beyond.

Chloe was among the counselors at Camp Mystic in Hunt, Texas, who lost their lives during the catastrophic July 4th weekend floods. As the Guadalupe River swelled and overtook parts of the camp, Chloe—true to who she had always been—acted selflessly, trying to help others in danger. She didn’t hesitate. She stepped in. And in doing so, she gave her life.

At least 11 young women and girls were killed in the Camp Mystic flooding. Chloe was one of them.

A recent graduate of The Kinkaid School in Houston, Chloe was just weeks away from starting her next chapter at the University of Texas at Austin. Her future was full of possibility, and her past was already rich with purpose.

She served as co-president of the Honor Council, ran varsity cross-country, and founded a student-led service club that provided companionship and support to senior citizens—acts that reflected not just involvement, but intentional leadership. LINCOLNTON, N.C. — A tragic collision Saturday morning on NC Highway 150 at Medical Center Drive resulted in the death of a 22-year-old Maiden resident and prompted an investigation by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 10:15 a.m. and involved a 1992 Nissan 240 and a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500. According to authorities, the Nissan, driven by Hunter Ray Tidmore of Maiden, attempted to make a left turn from a stop sign on Medical Center Drive onto NC 150. During the maneuver, Tidmore’s vehicle entered the path of the westbound Dodge Ram.

The driver of the Dodge, identified as 55-year-old Teddy Wilson Houser of Lincolnton, was unable to avoid the collision. Tidmore sustained critical injuries and was airlifted to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where he later died. Houser suffered minor injuries and was treated at Atrium Health Lincolnton.

State troopers say that neither speed nor impairment appear to have contributed to the crash, and no charges are expected to be filed. The highway remained closed for approximately two hours as investigators worked to reconstruct the scene and clear the roadway.

The investigation is ongoing, but officials have emphasized that the crash appears to be a tragic accident.
