Baldwin Park Police Officer Killed in the Line of Duty Identified as Samuel Riveros
BALDWIN PARK, CA — The Baldwin Park Police Department and the broader law enforcement community are mourning the tragic loss of Officer Samuel Riveros, who was killed in the line of duty during a violent shootout on Saturday, May 31, 2025.
Officer Riveros, a 9-year veteran of the department, was responding to reports of a suspect firing a rifle in a residential area on the 4200 block of Filhurst Avenue. The incident unfolded just after 7:21 p.m., when Baldwin Park officers arrived on scene and were immediately met with gunfire.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna confirmed during a late-night press conference that the officers were ambushed by the armed suspect upon arrival. Both Officer Riveros and another officer were struck by bullets in the exchange. Officer Riveros was airlifted to USC Medical Center, where, despite life-saving efforts, he succumbed to his injuries. The second officer, transported by ground ambulance, remains hospitalized in stable condition, surrounded by loved ones.
“This is a dark day for Baldwin Park,” said Chief Robin Lopez. “Officer Riveros served this community with honor, courage, and dedication. His loss is felt not only by our department, but by everyone who knew him.”
During the gunfire exchange, officers returned fire and wounded the suspect, who was taken into custody and is currently being treated at a local hospital in stable condition. Authorities have not yet released his identity.
Tragically, while securing the scene, officers also discovered a second victim, who had sustained fatal gunshot wounds. Investigators believe that person may have been killed by the suspect before officers arrived on scene.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is leading the investigation into the incident, which is now being treated as a double homicide, with Officer Riveros and the second victim as the deceased.
A large law enforcement presence remains in the area, and nearby streets have been cordoned off as detectives continue their investigation. It is currently unclear what relationship, if any, the suspect had to the second victim or what led to the initial shooting.
Officer Riveros is being remembered as a passionate and selfless public servant, known for his community outreach efforts, professionalism, and love for his family. His passing marks a profound loss for the Baldwin Park community.
