BREAKING: Officer-Involved Shooting After Ambush in Tulsa Leaves Suspect Dead
TULSA, OK — What began as a routine emergency response turned into a harrowing ambush Sunday afternoon, when a gunman opened fire on police officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, and civilians in a quiet Tulsa neighborhood. The suspect was fatally shot following a high-speed pursuit and shootout with officers.
According to the Tulsa Police Department, the incident began around 3:00 p.m. near 56th Street and Harvard Avenue, directly in front of Eisenhower Elementary School. Officers and first responders were dispatched to the scene following a 911 call reporting a man had been shot while jogging.
Upon arrival, officers found two joggers—one of whom had been shot in the leg. As police applied a tourniquet and emergency crews arrived, it appeared to be a typical medical emergency response. But what followed was anything but routine.
Unbeknownst to the responders, the suspect had been hiding behind a fire truck, waiting for the right moment to launch a calculated attack. As police and medics rendered aid to the wounded jogger, the gunman emerged from his hiding spot and opened fire on the crowd, targeting law enforcement and medical personnel.
Caught off guard, officers immediately shifted from rescue mode to active threat response, returning fire in an attempt to stop the ambush. The suspect retreated to his vehicle and fled the scene at high speed.
A pursuit ensued through residential neighborhoods as the suspect attempted to evade police. The chase ended in a cul-de-sac at 58th Street and Delaware Avenue, where the suspect exited the vehicle, fired again at officers, and was ultimately shot and killed during the exchange.
The suspect, described as a 30-year-old male, has not yet been publicly identified as authorities work to notify his next of kin. A firearm was recovered at the scene.
Despite the violent confrontation, no officers or emergency responders were injured. The injured jogger was transported to a local hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
“This was a brazen and dangerous attack on first responders who were doing everything they could to help someone in need,” said a Tulsa Police Department spokesperson. “Their quick actions likely prevented a far greater tragedy.”
In accordance with department policy, the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of a full investigation. The Tulsa Police Department’s Special Investigations Division and the District Attorney’s Office are reviewing all evidence, including body-worn camera footage and eyewitness accounts.
Authorities described the event as “highly unusual” and “deeply troubling”, especially given that the suspect returned to attack first responders after initially fleeing.
Police are asking residents with doorbell or surveillance footage from the area to come forward. Anyone with information is urged to contact Tulsa Crime Stoppers.
The area around Eisenhower Elementary and the shooting scene remained cordoned off for several hours while investigators worked to process the crime scenes.
This incident marks another sobering reminder of the dangers law enforcement and first responders face each day, even while responding to calls for help. More updates will be provided as the investigation continues.
