Second Shooting in Less Than a Month at Old Fourth Ward Skate Park Along the Beltline

Atlanta, GA — A popular skate park located off Willoughby Way in the Old Fourth Ward is once again at the center of a police investigation following the second shooting incident in less than a month.

Atlanta Police say a man was shot at the park tonight, though details remain limited. The victim is expected to survive, but the identity and motive of the shooter have not been released. APD officers remain on scene as the investigation unfolds.

This marks the second act of gun violence at the same location in recent weeks. On June 28, another individual was shot in the foot at the skate park around 2 p.m., reportedly following an argument. In that case, as well, police provided no further information about the suspect.

The string of violence has raised growing concerns among residents and Beltline users who frequent the area for recreation and family outings. The Old Fourth Ward skate park, once a symbol of community and urban revitalization, is now facing heightened scrutiny as law enforcement works to identify those responsible and ensure public safety.

Authorities are urging anyone with information related to either incident to contact the Atlanta Police Department as they continue to investigate both shootings.

  • Portage Woman Charged with Homicide in Fatal I-90 Head-On Crash That Killed 18-Year-Old Hallie Helgeson

Portage Woman Charged with Homicide in Fatal I-90 Head-On Crash That Killed 18-Year-Old Hallie Helgeson

MADISON, Wis.— A devastating head-on crash on I-90 near DeForest early Sunday morning has left one young life lost and a Portage woman facing multiple felony charges, including homicide.

According to the Wisconsin State Patrol, 30-year-old Noelia A. Martinez is accused of driving under the influence and causing the collision that killed 18-year-old Hallie J. Helgeson, a recent high school graduate from Montevideo, Minnesota. The crash occurred around 12:03 a.m. in the town of Vienna, Dane County.

Martinez is facing the following charges:

    • Homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle (with prior conviction/revocation)
    • Homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle with prohibited alcohol concentration (PAC)
    • OWI causing injury – second and subsequent offense
    • Operating with PAC causing injury – second and subsequent offense
    • Knowingly operating while revoked – causing death
    • Knowingly operating while revoked – causing great bodily harm
    • OWI – second offense
    • Operating with PAC – second offense
    • Failure to install an ignition interlock device

    The Crash

Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find two severely damaged vehicles: a Volkswagen Tiguan and a Chevrolet Suburban engulfed in flames, facing the wrong direction in northbound lanes.

Helgeson, a passenger in the Tiguan, was trapped and unresponsive. Despite attempts to save her, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Another male passenger was ejected and seriously injured, later airlifted to a hospital. Witnesses said they had to break windows to free the victims.

The Suburban, driven by Martinez, was reportedly seen traveling southbound in the northbound lanes prior to the crash. Beer cans were found scattered inside her vehicle. When questioned, Martinez appeared confused, believing she was already in Portage. She admitted to drinking before the crash and blew a .208 on a breath test—more than twice the legal limit.

A second crash involving a suspected intoxicated driver occurred nearby while authorities were still on scene, striking an unoccupied DeForest Police squad car.

    Remembering Hallie Helgeson

Hallie Helgeson was remembered in her obituary as a gifted, vibrant young woman with a bright future ahead. A recent graduate of Montevideo High School, she was a member of the National Honor Society and excelled in tennis, basketball, and softball. Hallie was also a devoted member of Salem Lutheran Church and had plans to pursue a career as an occupational therapy assistant at Lake Area Technical College in Watertown, South Dakota.

    Legal Proceedings

Martinez made her initial court appearance Tuesday. If convicted on the most serious charge—homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle—she faces up to 40 years in prison and a $100,000 fine. A status conference is scheduled for September 22.

This tragic event has sparked renewed conversations about the consequences of impaired driving and left two families forever changed—one mourning the loss of a beloved daughter, and the other facing the gravity of irreversible choices.

Judith Paulsel, 79, was confirmed to have died from sharp force injuries sustained in the collision.

Heartbreak in Elsmere: Mother Says 15-Year-Old Suspect in Teen’s Killing Was Her Daughter’s Boyfriend

ELSMERE, Ky.  — A grieving mother is speaking out following the tragic death of her 15-year-old daughter, Tristen Smith, who was fatally shot on Monday in the Northern Kentucky city of Elsmere. According to the teen’s mother, the suspect arrested in connection with the shooting was Tristen’s boyfriend—also just 15 years old.

Described by her family as “a light in the darkness,” Tristen was known for her vibrant personality, infectious energy, and joyful spirit. “She was the life of the party,” her mother said tearfully, remembering the way her daughter’s presence could brighten any room. Tristen had attended both Campbell County High School and Harrison High School.

The shooting occurred on Autumn Avenue. Elsmere police reported that after the incident, the teenage suspect fled the scene and claimed he discarded the weapon, though he was unsure where it landed. Officers have since spent extensive time canvassing the area, going door-to-door in search of the firearm. As of now, the gun has not been recovered.

Authorities are urging residents in the neighborhood to remain alert. They warn that the missing weapon is believed to still be loaded and may hold vital forensic evidence. If found, officials strongly advise against touching it and instead call police immediately.

The suspect has been charged as a juvenile with murder and tampering with physical evidence. Due to his age, police have not released his identity. His relationship with Tristen has raised even more questions and sorrow in a case that has already left a family—and an entire community—reeling.

Local 12 has made several attempts to contact Elsmere Police Chief Russell Wood for more details regarding the investigation, including the circumstances leading up to the shooting and the ongoing search for the weapon, but have not received a response at the time of this writing.

As the investigation continues, Tristen’s loved ones are left with unimaginable grief. Her mother’s words echo the heartache of a community mourning the senseless loss of a young life full of promise and light.

Missing Man’s Body Recovered from Lake Near Raleigh Springs Civic Center

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The search for a missing man ended in heartbreak Wednesday evening as officials recovered the body of Michael Martindell, 46, from the lake outside the Raleigh Springs Civic Center.

Michael was last seen on Tuesday evening, when witnesses reported he had gone into the water but never resurfaced. Emergency crews from the Memphis Fire and Police Departments launched a coordinated search around 7 p.m., but low visibility forced them to pause overnight. Recovery efforts resumed at sunrise Wednesday and concluded tragically when his body was found around 4:30 p.m..

His family, devastated by the loss, confirmed that surveillance footage showed Michael jumping into the lake. He was not seen exiting the water afterward.

Michael Martindell was experiencing homelessness and battling substance use disorder at the time of his death. His father, Barry Martindell, speaking through tears, said:

“My son didn’t just die from drowning. He died from the disease of alcohol and drug addiction. We’re going to miss him terribly.”

His daughter, Andrea Martindell, shared a powerful message with the community:

“Hug your loved ones close. Check on them. Check on their mental health… Always try to be there for somebody, even when you think you don’t have the time. Make time, because they need it.”

This tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the devastating toll addiction and mental health struggles can take, and the importance of compassion, connection, and support.

The Martindell family is urging anyone struggling—or loving someone who is—to seek help, reach out, and never give up on the ones they love.
