The Arkansas community is mourning the tragic loss of Jonathan Gary Williams, a 44-year-old contractor for the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT), who was among three individuals killed in a devastating series of crashes early Monday morning, July 21, 2025, along westbound Interstate 30 between Hope and Fulton, Arkansas.
Jonathan, a resident of Sherwood, was performing highway maintenance near the 18-mile marker in Hempstead County around 1 a.m. when he was fatally struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run incident. He had been operating a specialized trailer used to apply reflectors on the roadway when a 2004 Buick Century veered into the work zone, hitting him. The driver of the Buick fled the scene on foot and, as of the latest report, remains at large. The Arkansas State Police (ASP) continue to investigate and urge anyone with information to come forward.
Less than two hours later, a second crash occurred at the 19-mile marker, involving two vehicles. While no lives were lost, several individuals sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were treated on the scene.
A third and more severe crash followed near the 20-mile marker, involving multiple vehicles — three semi-trucks and a pickup truck. The impact tragically claimed the lives of 25-year-old Jonathan Garcia and 61-year-old Javier Rivera, both of Hope, Arkansas. Two additional passengers were seriously injured and transported to local hospitals.
The series of collisions led to the temporary closure of westbound lanes of I-30, allowing law enforcement and cleanup crews to respond. ARDOT Director Jared Wiley released a solemn statement in the wake of Jonathan’s passing, acknowledging his dedication to public safety and highlighting the dangers road crews face daily.
“These tragedies were preventable,” Wiley said. “Our hearts go out to the families and coworkers affected by these crashes. Highway workers risk their lives daily to maintain safe roads. We must do everything we can to safeguard them.”
Jonathan Gary Williams is remembered not only as a skilled and hardworking road technician, but also as a devoted family man and friend. His sudden death is a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those working to keep our roads safe. The impact of his loss will be deeply felt by his colleagues at ARDOT, his loved ones, and all who knew him.
As the investigation continues, the Arkansas State Police are asking for public assistance in locating the suspect involved in the initial hit-and-run. The community is encouraged to remain vigilant and prioritize safety in construction zones — to honor the lives lost and prevent further tragedies.
