Tragic Discovery in Upstate New York: 9-Year-Old Melina Frattolin Found Dead, Police Investigate Father’s Inconsistent Account

A heartbreaking tragedy has shaken both the United States and Canada, as authorities in upstate New York confirmed the death of 9-year-old Melina Frattolin, a Canadian girl whose father initially reported her missing and possibly abducted. Her body was discovered Sunday, July 20, 2025, near Ticonderoga, approximately 30 miles east of Lake George, where she was last reported seen.

Melina’s father, Luciano Frattolin, also of Canada, contacted New York State Police late Saturday evening to report that his daughter had gone missing near Lake George, a scenic area in the Adirondack Mountains. His report initially suggested a potential abduction. However, as the investigation unfolded, state police noted “inconsistencies” in his account and timeline, casting doubt on the initial story.

“There is no indication that an abduction occurred, and there is no threat to the public,” said New York State Police in a statement issued Sunday evening. No further details were released regarding the nature of the inconsistencies, and no charges have been announced at this time.

Melina’s body was located with the help of K9 units and aviation teams during a large-scale search effort in the Ticonderoga area—an historic and heavily wooded region roughly 250 miles north of New York City, popular for summer vacations and outdoor recreation.

The whereabouts of Luciano Frattolin, 45, remained unclear late Sunday. He has not responded to requests for comment sent through LinkedIn, Instagram, and his company website. On social media, Frattolin has referred to himself as a “loving father,” and a now-painfully poignant post on his coffee company’s website described Melina as “the light of his life” and “the inspiration for … well, everything.”

Authorities have scheduled a news conference for Monday to provide further updates as the case continues to unfold.

The investigation remains active and ongoing. For now, the tragic loss of a young girl—described by her father’s own words as a bright light—has left a somber shadow over two nations, as loved ones and communities await answers.
