Florida Nurse Arrested After Shocking Abuse of Disabled 18-Year-Old Caught on Camera
Orange County, FL — A Florida nurse is facing serious charges after disturbing home surveillance footage revealed the alleged abuse of a vulnerable, non-verbal quadriplegic woman under her care.
Nia Ayers, 24, has been arrested and charged with aggravated abuse of an elderly or disabled adult after authorities reviewed footage showing her taping the mouth shut of an 18-year-old woman with cerebral palsy and violently tampering with the victim’s breathing machine.
The young woman, who is non-verbal and fully dependent on care, was reportedly assaulted multiple times while Ayers worked as her caregiver. According to police, the footage shows Ayers repeatedly applying and then ripping off tape from the woman’s mouth, holding a washcloth over her face, and shaking her BiPAP breathing machine while it was still connected to her nose — actions that could have severely compromised her ability to breathe.
The victim’s mother reportedly discovered cuts and abrasions on her daughter’s face, prompting her to review security camera footage in the home. What she found led her to immediately contact law enforcement.
“This is a truly heinous act,” said Chief of Police Douglas Goerke. “The victim in this case is completely unable to defend herself or cry out for help. The cruelty captured on video is beyond disturbing.”
Authorities have not disclosed how long Ayers had been employed as the woman’s caregiver or whether there may be additional victims. She is currently being held pending further legal proceedings.
The case has ignited outrage across the community and renewed conversations about accountability in home health care. Investigators are urging anyone with further information to come forward.
