John Thrasher, Influential Florida Statesman and Former FSU President, Dies at 81
TALLAHASSEE, FL — John Thrasher, a deeply respected leader in Florida politics and higher education, has passed away at the age of 81 after a battle with cancer, his family announced on May 30. A man of unwavering dedication and public service, Thrasher leaves behind a remarkable legacy that spans the political, academic, and civic spheres of Florida.
A proud Florida native and lifelong Republican, Thrasher was a key figure in the state’s political transformation during the 1990s and 2000s as the GOP gained dominance. He began his political career in the Florida House of Representatives in 1992, serving until 2000 and holding the role of Speaker of the House from 1998 to 2000. Later, he was elected to the Florida Senate, where he served with distinction, including as Chair of the Senate Rules Committee.
Between his legislative roles, Thrasher was a founding partner at The Southern Group, a prominent lobbying firm, where he worked from 2001 to 2009. He also played a leading role in Governor Rick Scott’s successful 2014 reelection campaign.
In 2014, Thrasher was selected as the 15th President of Florida State University (FSU), a nomination made by former FSU president and noted Democrat Sandy D’Alemberte. His tenure at FSU, which lasted until 2021, was defined by strong leadership, academic advancement, and a steady hand in times of crisis.
One of the most harrowing moments of Thrasher’s presidency came in November 2014, when a gunman opened fire inside FSU’s Strozier Library, injuring three students. Thrasher’s calm and compassionate response earned widespread praise as he guided the university through the tragedy with grace and resilience.
After retiring from FSU, Thrasher returned to The Southern Group and continued his commitment to education as a professor at the FSU College of Law, where he once studied. According to his FSU Law biography, Thrasher earned his bachelor’s degree in business from FSU in 1965 before serving in the U.S. Army. He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal and two Bronze Stars for his service in Vietnam, achieving the rank of captain. He later returned to FSU, graduating with honors from the College of Law in 1972.
Throughout his life, John Thrasher was more than a public servant—he was a patriot, mentor, statesman, and advocate for progress. His contributions to Florida’s political and academic institutions are enduring, and his legacy will continue to influence generations to come.
He is survived by his beloved family, friends, and a grateful state.
