KDPS Identifies Victim in Fatal Shooting; Suspect in Custody and Arraigned on Multiple Charges

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) has identified the victim of a fatal shooting that occurred early Wednesday morning as 42-year-old Michael Richard Powers of Kalamazoo. The tragic incident unfolded just after 1:30 a.m. on May 28, 2025, near Riverview Drive and East Paterson Street.

According to KDPS, a public safety officer was flagged down in the area by a concerned citizen who reported a possible shooting. Simultaneously, multiple 911 calls came in confirming reports of gunfire. Officers responded immediately and discovered Mr. Powers suffering from gunshot wounds to the head and abdomen.

Emergency medical aid was initiated on scene, and CPR was performed as Mr. Powers was rushed to a local hospital. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at 3:16 a.m.

Following an intensive investigation, KDPS identified 28-year-old Anthony Shawn-Tyrone Thomas as the suspect in the case. Thomas was taken into custody on June 1 without incident. On June 2, he was arraigned in court and formally charged with the following:

  • Open Murder
  • Felony Firearm (2 counts)
  • Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person
  • Carrying a Concealed Weapon

During his arraignment, bond was denied for Thomas. He remains in custody at the Kalamazoo County Jail as legal proceedings move forward.

Community Reaction and Condolences

In an official statement, KDPS extended its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Michael Powers, expressing support for those mourning his loss.

“We understand the deep pain that a violent and unexpected death brings to a community,” said a KDPS spokesperson. “Our officers remain committed to pursuing justice and maintaining the safety of every Kalamazoo resident.”

Ongoing Investigation
