Naseem King, 18, Remembered After Tragic I-64 Shooting in Henrico County
HENRICO COUNTY, Va. — Heartbreak ripples through the Varina High School community and across Henrico County as family and friends mourn the loss of Naseem King, an 18-year-old student whose life was tragically cut short in a weekend shooting.
According to Virginia State Police, King was fatally shot early Sunday morning while driving on Interstate 64 near the Richmond exit. Authorities believe the incident was isolated, but further details about the circumstances have not been released. Two other individuals were in the vehicle at the time of the shooting but were not injured.
Naseem’s family is devastated, mourning the loss of a son they described as kind, intelligent, and deeply loving. A senior at Varina High School, Naseem had dreams of becoming a graphic designer. He was known for his creativity, uplifting spirit, and the way he made those around him feel supported—especially his sisters, whom he often encouraged through laughter and advice.
On Monday, Varina High School offered grief counseling and made mental health resources available through the Henrico CARES telehealth program, helping students and staff begin to process the shocking loss.
“I’m deeply saddened to learn that we’ve lost one of our own,” said Alicia Atkins, Henrico School Board Member. “These tragedies continue to shake us, and the pain is real. Naseem was a part of Varina Nation, and his absence is felt by so many.”
Virginia State Police continue to investigate, and at this time, they confirm no known threats to the public.
The King family plans to announce details about a memorial service in the coming days. As they navigate this unimaginable grief, the community stands united in honoring Naseem’s life and legacy.
May his memory live on through the light he shared with those who knew and loved him.
