Shots Fired Near AMC Theater in Dothan Sparks Police Investigation, No Injuries Reported
DOTHAN, AL – A peaceful evening at the AMC Classic 6 theater in Dothan took a frightening turn on Monday, June 2, 2025, when reports of gunfire disrupted the area and prompted a swift response from local law enforcement. According to the Dothan Police Department, multiple calls were made to 911 just after 8:15 p.m., alerting authorities to shots being fired in the vicinity of the popular movie theater located off Montgomery Highway.
Officers arrived within minutes to find the parking lot partially cleared, with frightened patrons huddled inside the building and several vehicles leaving the scene in haste. A perimeter was quickly established, and police began combing the area for evidence while ensuring the safety of those still inside the theater complex.
Chaos in a Family-Friendly Setting
According to witnesses, the gunfire appeared to originate from just outside the theater, near the parking area where groups of people had gathered. At least six shots were reportedly heard, though the Dothan Police Department has not confirmed the exact number.
“I was standing in line for popcorn when I heard what sounded like fireworks,” said Tony McDaniel, a moviegoer at the scene. “Then everyone started yelling ‘gunshots,’ and we just dropped to the floor. It was terrifying — this is where families come for a fun night out.”
The theater was placed on a brief lockdown while officers cleared the surrounding areas and began questioning witnesses. Several moviegoers were escorted out in small groups to ensure order and safety. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported, and no bullet holes or damage to the theater have been confirmed.
Investigation Underway
Dothan Police are actively investigating the incident and believe the shooting may have been the result of an altercation that occurred in or near the parking lot. Detectives spent several hours at the scene gathering shell casings, examining nearby vehicles for potential damage, and reviewing surveillance footage from the theater and adjacent businesses.
While no suspects had been named as of Tuesday morning, authorities say they are following up on leads and encourage the public to come forward with any information.
“We are treating this very seriously,” said Lt. Scott Owens of the Dothan Police Department. “We believe this was an isolated incident, but it put a lot of innocent people at risk. Our primary goal is to identify and locate the individual or individuals responsible.”
Community Response
The incident has sparked concern in the community, especially given the popularity of the AMC Theater as a family entertainment hub. Monday evenings often see an influx of moviegoers, including children and teens, and the thought of gun violence erupting in such a setting has left many shaken.
“This is Dothan. Things like this aren’t supposed to happen here,” said a local mother who asked to remain anonymous. “We need to feel safe bringing our kids to the movies.”
City officials and community leaders are echoing those concerns and calling for vigilance, as well as support for the ongoing investigation.
Police Seek Public’s Help
As the investigation continues, the Dothan Police Department is asking anyone who was in the area or who may have dashcam or cellphone footage from around the time of the shooting to come forward. Anonymous tips can be submitted through the department’s crime tip line or online portal.
