SUSPECT ARRESTED IN DEADLY MICHIGAN CITY SHOOTING: D’Marcus Thompson Charged with Murder and Attempted Murder

MICHIGAN CITY, IN – A violent altercation late Thursday night on Michigan City’s east side has resulted in one death, another person critically injured, and a suspect now behind bars. The Michigan City Police Department announced the arrest of 23-year-old D’Marcus Thompson, of Gary, in connection with the fatal shooting that unfolded on May 29.

A Night of Tragedy

The incident began at approximately 10:58 p.m., when the LaPorte County Regional Dispatch Center received a harrowing 911 call from a man claiming someone was trying to kill him. Officers were dispatched to the area of Dewey Street and Michigan Boulevard, where they quickly located a distressed male near the intersection.

As officers engaged with the caller, another man emerged from a nearby home at 1824 E. Michigan Boulevard, informing authorities that a person had been shot inside the residence.

Victims Identified

Inside the home, police discovered two brothers who had sustained gunshot wounds:

  • Treven Armstrong, 25, of Gary — pronounced dead at the scene.
  • Christopher Armstrong, 24, of Indianapolis — critically injured and transported by LaPorte County EMS to Franciscan Hospital, before being transferred to South Bend Memorial Hospital for advanced care.

The shooting has sent shockwaves through both the Michigan City and Gary communities, as the victims’ family and friends mourn the senseless violence.

Multi-Agency Response and Arrest

Officers from Michigan City Police, Long Beach Police, Trail Creek Police, and the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department responded to the evolving situation, securing the area and launching a swift investigation.

A search warrant was executed at the residence by the Michigan City Police Department’s Investigative Division, assisted by the LaPorte County Prosecutor’s Office. Investigators collected evidence, spoke to witnesses, and within hours, identified D’Marcus Thompson as the primary suspect.

Officer Rachel Davis located and arrested Thompson in the 300 block of S. Woodland Avenue. During the arrest, a 9mm handgun was recovered from Thompson’s possession.

Charges and Legal Proceedings

The investigation, led by Detective Corporal Deshone Harris, was presented to LaPorte County Prosecutor Sean Fagan and Chief Deputy Prosecutor Charles Watterson. After reviewing the evidence, Circuit Court Magistrate Erika Stallworth found probable cause and issued a warrant for Thompson’s arrest.

He now faces multiple serious charges:

  • Murder (Felony)
  • Attempted Murder (Level 1 Felony)
  • Aggravated Battery (Level 3 Felony)
  • Criminal Recklessness (Level 5 Felony)

Thompson is being held on a $1,000,000 cash-only bond.
