Suspect in Connecticut Mall Shooting Identified as 19-Year-Old Tajuan Washington, Who Was Out on Bond
Waterbury, CT — The suspect behind the violent shooting that wounded five people at the Brass Mill Center in Waterbury has been identified as 19-year-old Tajuan Washington. Officials revealed that Washington was out on a $25,000 bond at the time of the incident, stemming from separate charges.
The shooting occurred on Tuesday afternoon near the main entrance of the popular shopping center, just before 5 p.m. According to Waterbury Mayor Paul K. Pernerewski, Jr., the violence erupted after Washington confronted a man with whom he reportedly had a longstanding dispute. During the confrontation, Washington opened fire, injuring the man and four women who were with him.
“This was not a random act of violence,” Mayor Pernerewski emphasized during a news conference. “This was a one-off incident related to a personal conflict.” He further reassured the public, stating that the mall remains safe for shopping and daily activities.
The five victims, including the man targeted and the four women, were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Authorities have not released detailed information about their conditions but confirmed that they are recovering from their injuries.
Washington, who was already facing criminal charges at the time, had been released on bond pending trial. The revelation that he was out on bond has raised concerns about the criminal justice system’s handling of individuals awaiting trial, especially in cases involving potential violence.
Law enforcement officials are now working diligently to piece together the full sequence of events leading to the shooting. Surveillance footage from the mall and witness testimonies have been crucial in reconstructing the incident. Police also continue to explore any other potential connections or motives related to the case.
The incident has shaken the Waterbury community, where the Brass Mill Center is a central hub for shopping, socializing, and local events. Residents expressed shock that such a violent act could occur in a familiar and public place.
“It’s unsettling to know this happened in a place where families and children come regularly,” said a local shopper. “We appreciate the police and city officials working to keep us safe.”
Mayor Pernerewski and local police have pledged to enhance security measures at the mall and throughout the city in the wake of the shooting. They encourage anyone with additional information to assist investigators by coming forward.
Tajuan Washington currently remains in custody, facing multiple charges related to the shooting, including assault with a deadly weapon and other felony counts. His bond status and prior charges will likely factor into upcoming court proceedings.
The mayor reiterated the importance of community cooperation and vigilance. “Our priority is the safety and well-being of every resident. Incidents like this remind us all of the need to stay engaged, report suspicious activity, and support each other.”
As investigations continue, the focus remains on ensuring justice for the victims and restoring a sense of security to Waterbury’s residents and visitors.
