Tennessee Man Charged with 3 Counts of Attempted Murder After I-65 Highway Shooting in Alabama
LIMESTONE COUNTY, Ala. — A dangerous incident along I-65 in north Alabama has led to the arrest of a Tennessee man now facing multiple felony charges, including three counts of attempted murder. Authorities say the suspect opened fire on a family traveling along the interstate, narrowly avoiding a deadly tragedy.
According to the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO), deputies were dispatched to Mile Marker 347 on I-65 Saturday after a 911 caller reported that a man riding a motorcycle had fired shots at him and his family. The caller said they were traveling northbound when the motorcyclist began discharging a firearm directly at their vehicle, which was struck by the gunfire. Officials emphasized that the lives of the occupants inside—reportedly including children—were placed in serious danger.
Suspect Identified and Apprehended
Thanks to a detailed description provided by the victim, an alert was issued across state and local law enforcement channels. Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) located a suspect matching the description roughly 10 miles from the scene. LCSO deputies responded to assist in the traffic stop and positively identified the suspect as Jason Jermain Johnson, age 30, of Centerville, Tennessee.
During the arrest, deputies discovered Johnson was heavily armed. He was found to be in possession of:
- A loaded pistol
- Two additional loaded magazines
- A bullet-resistant vest worn underneath a vest bearing the insignia of the Outcast Motorcycle Club, a known motorcycle group.
Charges Filed
Johnson has been charged with three counts of attempted murder and shooting into an occupied vehicle, both serious felony offenses under Alabama law. He is currently being held without bond, pending a court hearing under Aniah’s Law, which allows for certain violent offenders to be held without bond if they are deemed a threat to the community.
Public Response and Safety Statement
“This reckless violence has no place on our highways,” said Sheriff Joshua McLaughlin of the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office. “We are thankful no innocent lives were lost, and we will continue to work closely with our law enforcement partners to ensure the public’s safety.”
The LCSO is continuing its investigation into the motive behind the shooting and Johnson’s affiliations, including any possible links to gang or organized motorcycle activity.
Authorities are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage from the area around Mile Marker 347 on I-65 during the time of the shooting to contact the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office at (256) 232-0111.
