Three Family Members Killed in Fiery Multi-Car Crash on I-40 in Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A heartbreaking tragedy has shaken the Memphis community as authorities confirm that Tonya Cannady and her two sons, Barry and Scott, were killed in a devastating multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 40 near Hollywood on Saturday, May 31.

The crash, which involved five vehicles, resulted in a fire that consumed the vehicle carrying Cannady and her sons. According to a preliminary report from the Memphis Police Department, one additional person was transported to the hospital with injuries. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Tonya Cannady was a beloved figure in her community and a long-time employee of Youth Villages, where she had worked for over two decades. Just last year, she celebrated her 20th work anniversary with the organization, and as of this year, she had served 22 years — most recently as the nutrition services manager for Youth Villages’ West Tennessee residential facilities.

In a heartfelt statement, Youth Villages honored Cannady’s legacy:

“We are deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Ms. Tonya Cannady along with her two sons, Barry and Scott, in yesterday’s horrific car crash. Ms. Cannady was a wonderful part of our organization, celebrating 22 years with Youth Villages this year. She touched the lives of thousands over that time, including children and staff. Our hearts go out to her family during this time. She will be missed by so many of us.”

Friends, coworkers, and witnesses are struggling to come to terms with the sudden and tragic loss. One witness, Franchesca Roland, recounted the terrifying moments after the crash.

“And the passenger we did get out, we started performing CPR on her. We had to keep on picking her up and moving her away from the fires. It was just a lot. A lot of stuff going on.”

Roland, along with others at the scene, desperately tried to help but was overwhelmed by the intensity of the fire. The family’s vehicle was engulfed in flames before all occupants could be rescued.

Those who knew Cannady describe her and her sons as inseparable — a close-knit family that radiated love and strength. Her passing leaves a deep void not only within her family but across her workplace and the larger Memphis community.

As the investigation into the crash continues, community members are left mourning an unimaginable loss. Grief counselors and support services are being offered at Youth Villages, and many are calling for increased road safety awareness in the wake of this devastating event.

The Memphis Police Department is asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information to come forward.
