MOBILE, AL — A night meant to celebrate art, youth, and community ended in devastating tragedy at Mobile’s historic Saenger Theatre on Sunday night. During a dance recital, gunfire shattered the joyous occasion, leaving one man dead, another injured, and hundreds of attendees in shock.

According to the Mobile Police Department, 27-year-old Carl Williams III was fatally shot during the incident. A second victim, whose identity has not yet been released, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to recover.

The alleged shooter, Marcus Dangelo Sanders, also 27, was taken into custody at the scene and has been charged with murder. Authorities believe the shooting was targeted, although the investigation remains ongoing to determine a full motive.

The shooting took place in front of families, performers, and children, many of whom ran for cover in confusion and fear as the sound of gunfire echoed through the auditorium. Witnesses described the chaos that unfolded in a matter of seconds during what had been a peaceful and festive evening.

Mobile Police responded within minutes, securing the area and providing emergency medical assistance. The Saenger Theatre was evacuated as law enforcement began their investigation.

In a statement released Monday morning, Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson expressed sorrow and outrage:

“This was a senseless act of violence that has shaken our community. Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and all who were affected by this tragedy.”

The Saenger Theatre, a downtown landmark known for its elegant architecture and role as a cultural hub, has never witnessed an incident of this magnitude. City leaders now face the difficult task of ensuring safety at public venues while supporting a grieving community.
