Woman Killed in Boom Island Park Shooting Identified as 23-Year-Old Stageina Whiting; Six Others Injured in Chaos
MINNEAPOLIS, MN — Authorities have identified the woman killed during a violent outbreak of gunfire at Boom Island Park on Sunday evening as Stageina Whiting, 23, of Brooklyn Center. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Whiting died at Hennepin County Medical Center from a gunshot wound to the torso.
The shooting unfolded around 9:30 p.m. during a large gathering at the park when an altercation escalated into a chaotic scene of violence. Six other individuals were injured, including five men who were shot—one of whom remains in life-threatening condition—and another woman who was knocked unconscious during the incident.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara described the scene as resembling a “war zone”, citing the extensive number of shell casings scattered across the park grounds. He indicated that preliminary investigations suggest multiple shooters may have been involved. As of Monday evening, no arrests had been made.
“This level of violence is completely unacceptable,” said Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey during a press briefing. “My heart is with the victims and their loved ones today. We’re launching Operation Safe Summer this week, a coordinated effort with law enforcement at every level to prevent violence and keep people safe.”
The shooting has also drawn reaction from elected leaders. Third District Congresswoman Ilhan Omar released a statement saying, “I’m devastated by the tragic shooting at Boom Island Park last night. My heart is with the victims, their families, and all those who were at the park during such a terrifying moment. Our community should feel safe in parks and public spaces—no matter the time of day.”
Authorities are asking anyone with information or video footage related to the shooting to come forward as detectives continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses.
